The role of Physiotherapy in sport:

Physiotherapy plays an important role in the assessment and treatment of sports injuries. A Physiotherapist can be usefully employed throughout the season.

Pre-season
During pre-season Physiotherapy is used to screen players for potential weaknesses and injuries. Baseline measurements of fitness and coordination can be taken so that when a player is injured these can be compared and the player can be returned to sport when he achieves his pre-injury scores.
It is a useful time to sort out that old niggling injury that never quite settles. We know that muscle wasting and poor proprioception leave one susceptible to re-injury. These problems need dedicated rehab to restore their normal function.
Pre-season is a good time to develop good core stability (the deep trunk and shoulder blade muscles that stabilise the body when kicking, throwing and serving etc).

Training
Injuries occur during training for a number of reasons: overtraining, fatigue, insufficient warm-up and accidents. Physiotherapists can assess, treat and rehabilitate injured players.

Pre-match
Taping, massage, soft tissue techniques, manipulation and mobilisations are just a few of the modalities physios administer to prepare players for the match.

During the match
Pitch side first aid is essential. Physios make safe decisions on player's injuries quickly.

Post-match
The physio is there to deal with any post-match injuries. The quicker the injury is assessed the sooner the appropriate treatment can be administered and the quicker the player can return to sport.
