Physiotherapy

When you come for your first consultation, the physiotherapist will spend an hour taking a detailed history of your problem and carrying out a physical examination. The physiotherapist will discuss the findings with you and make a plan of treatment.

The treatment itself may involve manual therapy – to loosen up stiff joints or tight soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, interconnecting tissues and nerves), electrotherapy (e.g. ultrasound) to help the healing process and some exercises. The exercises may be to increase flexibility and movement, strengthen muscles or improve balance and coordination. There will be plenty of advice on what you can do to prevent a re-occurrence.

Long-standing or overuse conditions are often the result of bad habits - e.g. poor sitting posture with back pain, or incorrect stroke technique with tennis elbow. We will help you identify these incorrect movements or postures and correct them. Sometimes it is a matter of a less sedentary lifestyle and in other cases it is necessary to teach exercises which will address imbalances in power between muscles groups.
