Sports Massage In Barnes

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a type of massage used specifically for treating the muscles and connective tissues of the body in order to get them:

  • in the best condition for sport
  • stretched out if some are tight
  • healing quickly when injured
  • back to full recovery after an event

What does sports massage involve?

Sports massage can be stimulating or relaxing depending on the effects you want to achieve.

A constant build up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses in the joints, ligaments and tendons as well as in the muscles themselves. These muscle imbalances can cause discomfort and impede performance in sport.

The sports massage therapist can detect variations in the soft tissues and then use specific techniques to release those areas and make the tissues more supple. They may use techniques such as trigger point release, soft tissue release, transverse frictions, muscle energy techniques and myofascial release to name but a few!

Sports massage can be used to prepare the muscles for a sporting event and afterwards to relieve the build up of waste products within the muscles, cutting down on soreness felt afterwards.

If you are training for an event such as the London Marathon, sports massage is beneficial as an ongoing treatment to help the tissues recover from the increased training demands and to help you work on muscles that may be tight and affecting your biomechanics.

Our sports massage therapists are experienced in dealing with athletes – whether it be in preparation for a marathon or triathlon or simply to get you through the rigours of your Sunday league footie matches – they are fully trained for the job in hand!

Our team

We have a team of three sports massage therapists – Rachel, Alice and Ruth. We offer massage on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Our sports massage therapists have all completed the BTEC Level 5 Diploma  or the ITEC Level 4 in sports massage therapy and have many years of experience between them.
